One of the most memorable moments of my time in public service occurred during the Texas Special Olympics. As Governor, I was invited to welcome the athletes and families to Memorial Stadium. Then I was assigned a lane. I was a hugger. I can't remember how many finishers I embraced, but I do remember how moved I was because of their courage and joy.

I thank Eunice Shriver for her vision to start the Special Olympics and for her drive to ensure the success of the movement.
