A Letter from Special Olympics Michigan

LET IT BE KNOWN, That Special Olympics Michigan Inc. Board of Directors and staff are proud to join with the athletes, coaches, volunteers and friends of Special Olympics as they celebrate the life and legacy of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, founder of Special Olympics. On this day, Thursday, August 13, 2009 at a regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Directors, we issue this resolution as a reflection of compassion and commitment for Special Olympics in memory of Eunice Kennedy Shriver.

WHEREAS, Special Olympics Michigan Inc. began its involvement in 1968 by attending the first Special Olympics competition at Soldiers Field in Chicago, Illinois; and Special Olympics Michigan Inc. proudly hosting the 1975 International Games in Mount Pleasant at Central Michigan University; and

WHEREAS, Special Olympics Michigan Inc. has grown into a program serving over 17,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities throughout the state with sports programs, Athlete Leadership Programs, Healthy Athlete Programs, Unified Sports, Motor Activities Programs and Young Athlete Programs;

WHEREAS, over 20,000 volunteers annually work to offer combined programming that changes the lives of the athletes, their families and volunteers forever through building programs, and where acceptance, compassion, a commitment to excellence and a culture of welcome is present; and

WHEREAS, we acknowledged and pay tribute to the extraordinary vision and leadership that Eunice Kennedy Shriver had so that Special Olympics could grow over the last 41 years into a worldwide movement, serving over three million athletes in more than 180 years into a worldwide movement, serving over three million athletes in more than 180 countries around the world;

NOW, THEREFORE, In Special Tribute to Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the Board of Directors for Special Olympics Michigan, Inc. does herby rededicate Special Olympics Michigan Inc. to the mission of Special Olympics and will continue the legacy stared by Eunice Kennedy Shriver.
