A Letter from RoAnn M. DestitoMember of The Assembly State of New York Albany

I would like to express my deepest condolences to you and your staff; your many volunteers and supporters; and to the many athletes who participate in the Special Olympics on the death of your organization's founder, Eunice Kennedy Shriver.

The success of Eunice Shriver's remarkable vision for a series of athletic contests emphasizing the self-worth and accomplishments of each participant was a remarkable achievement. But perhaps even more importantly, she dramatically changed society's perception of the intellectually disabled. Her efforts resulted in the public's acceptance of the disabled, and the creation of many more programs and services to assist disabled clients and their families.

The Special Olympics program is one that I have long supported. I am always honored to attend the Oneida County Special Olympics, and when I see the pride and determination of its athletes, I will always reflect on the Eunice Shriver's legacy as long as the Special Olympics torch is carried.
