Dear Sarge,

Please accept my heartfelt condolences on the recent death of your beloved wife, Eunice. Fifty-six years is a long time to share with your partner. I wish I had the words to ease your pain. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your entire family in this very sad time.

It's very hard to believe that Eunice is gone from us. She was such a large part of the fabric of America. She was born into one iconic American family and married into another. She learned early that much is expected of those who have been given much and she eagerly stepped up to that challenge. With a passion for social justice and compassion for the human condition, Eunice spent her days making a real difference in the lives of real people.

Eunice never hesitated to take the first step to right a wrong, to protect the vulnerable or to extend a hand of mercy and understanding. And while she never knew first hand the string of discrimination, the lack of education and limited opportunity, nevertheless she worked tirelessly her life long to lift these same burdens from others. She will be remembered most for her inspired leadership and unfailing support for the disabled.

I know you will find comfort in the love and strength of family and friends and solace in the knowledge that Eunice will remain in the hearts and minds of people around the world for many years to come. The best of her lives in your children and grandchildren. I join you in mourning the passing of this truly remarkable woman.

With my deepest sympathy, I remain.
