Eunice Kennedy Shriver
Eunice Kennedy Shriver is most known as the founder of the Special Olympics that she organized in 1968 but she achieved much more. Shriver was a champion for the welfare of those with mental disabilities. She saw the potential in people with mental disabilities and wanted to help them achieve their fullest potential.
Public service has a long tradition in the Kennedy family, and Eunice Kennedy Shriver is an extraordinary example to us all. She took one of the most personal parts of her life the love of her mentally retarded sister, and used it to inspire her to change the perception of a nation.
With her passing we have lost a truly remarkable voice, a voice so strong and clear in the message of hope and human possibility. But she will remain a role model for generations of Americans who want to make a difference.
