Mark Shriver, VP/Managing Director of Save the Children USA
He also leads Save the Children's domestic emergency response programs and efforts to ensure that the unique needs of children are incorporated into disaster preparedness, response and recovery plans. In this capacity, Shriver serves as national spokesman for U.S. Programs and provides leadership to the day-to-day operations.
Since joining Save the Children in 2003, Shriver has successfully diversified revenue sources for U.S. Programs (including securing the largest private gift in the Program's 77-year history)and he has significantly enhanced productivity while expanding the number of children served in the United States.
Shriver's record of public service is equally distinguished. He served two four-year terms as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates and was Maryland's first-ever Chair of the Joint Committee on Children, Youth and Families. Shriver also was appointed Chair of the Children and Youth Subcommittee of the House Ways and Means Committee. During his legislative service, he was repeatedly recognized as Outstanding Legislator of the Year by prominent advocacy and civic organizations. In 2002, Shriver was a candidate for Maryland's 8th Congressional District, raising in excess of $2.7 million dollars and garnering 39% of the vote in a four-way race.
In 1988, Shriver founded the innovative Choice Program, a public/private partnership that serves delinquent and at-risk youth through intensive, community-based counseling and job training services in partnership with the State of Maryland, The University of Maryland Baltimore County, the City of Baltimore, Baltimore County, Prince George's County, private businesses, and foundations. He subsequently created The Choice Jobs Program, Inc., a private, non-profit corporation that trained, placed, and supported former Choice clients in job and The Choice Middle Schools Program, a model designed to keep at-risk middle school age children in school.
Shriver's private sector experience includes a career in the telecommunications sector. He spearheaded LCI International's entry into the local services arena, competing against the Regional Bell Operating Companies and other local service providers. He had P+L responsibility for the division he created; the division had over a $40 million run rate when LCI was acquired by Qwest.
Shriver has been widely published in the national media, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Washington Times, and Newsweek, among others. His work has been covered by NPR, ABC News, The Washington Post, and Time; George Will wrote a nationally syndicated column on his work as well. He serves as the Chairperson of the Nation Commission on Children and Disasters and is a member of the Federal Emergency Management Agency's National Advisory Council. He has also served on the Task Force to Study the Governance, Coordination and Funding of the University of Maryland System (1998-1999) and the Maryland Governor's Commission on Service (1994-1995).
Shriver received his undergraduate degree from The College of the Holy Cross in 1986 and a Master's degree in Public Administration from Harvard University in 1993. In 1994, he received an Honorary Degree from Loyola College in Baltimore for his work in The Choice Programs.
Shriver and his wife, Jeanne Ripp Shriver, are the proud parents of Molly, Tommy and Emma. The family resides in Bethesda, Maryland.
