STATEMENT BY MAYOR RICHARD M. DALEY
ON THE PASSING OF
EUNICE KENNEDY SHRIVER
On behalf of all Chicagoans, I extend my condolences to the family and many friends of Eunice Kennedy Shriver.
Eunice Shriver was an extraordinary woman, and we are fortunate that in the 1950s she called Chicago home and contributed greatly to our city's progress.
Forty one years ago, she helped found the Special Olympics here, a movement that has made a positive impact on the lives of more than 2.5 million athletes and their families around the world.
She distinguished herself as a longtime advocate on children's health and disability issues and helped to establish the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
Perhaps most important, Eunice Shriver was a caring person whose compassion for others knew few boundaries. She helped to make our country a better place and will be greatly missed.
Donations power our worldwide movement to bring dignity and empowerment to people with intellectual disabilities.
